Blood Drawing Tips

1. Prior to every access, always swab the top of the SmartSite® needle-free valve port with a sterile 70% isopropyl alcohol wipe (1-2 seconds) and allow to dry (approximately 30 seconds).
2. Connect a standard syringe or blood draw holder with adapter. For discard/waste guidelines, refer to facility protocol.
3. Draw required specimen.
4. Detach the syringe or blood draw holder with adapter.
5. Prior to every access, always swab the top of the SmartSite® needle-free valve port with a sterile 70% isopropyl alcohol wipe (1-2 seconds) and allow to dry (approximately 30 seconds).
6. Flush the SmartSite® needle-free valve and access line. In accordance with INS positive pressure flushing standards, apply clamp before disconnecting syringe to help prevent any reflux in the catheter lumen.
7. Remove the syringe from the SmartSite® needle-free valve by turning counterclockwise.
